AND :
Try this. Start with just a few minutes per day. Don't be exasperated with yourself.
THE IMPACT OF MEDITATION ON THE BRAIN --
Brain imaging shows that when we master a task such as playing an instrument or the advanced performance in a sport, specific parts of the brain are transformed -- certain neural pathways grow and strengthen. Neuroscientists have now shown that the same could be true for mastery of meditation, with direct benefits for improving focus, overcoming depression, dealing with pain and cultivating emotional well-being:
"A comparison of the brain scans of meditators with tens of thousands of hours of practice with those of neophytes and nonmeditators has started to explain why this set of techniques for training the mind holds great potential for supplying cognitive and emotional benefits. ...
"The discovery of meditation's benefits coincides with recent neuroscientific findings showing that the adult brain can still be deeply transformed through experience. These studies show that when we learn how to juggle or play a musical instrument, the brain undergoes changes through a process called neuroplasticity. A brain region that controls the movement of a violinist's fingers becomes progressively larger with mastery of the instrument. A similar process appears to happen when we meditate. Nothing changes in the surrounding environment, but the meditator regulates mental states to achieve a form of inner enrichment, an experience that affects brain functioning and its physical structure. The evidence amassed from this research has begun to show that meditation can rewire brain circuits to produce salutary effects not just on the mind and the brain but on the entire body. ...
A) 12 expert meditators had greater overlap of increased activation of attention-related brain regions.
B) 12 non-meditators had less overlap and activation. Orange hues equal higher correlation between individuals & activation. Blue hues equal little to no correlation between regions of activation.
"Neuroscientists have now begun to probe what happens inside the brain during the various types of meditation. Wendy Hasenkamp, then at Emory University, and her colleagues used brain imaging to identify the neural networks activated by focused-attention meditation. ... Advanced meditators appear to acquire a level of skill that enables them to achieve a focused state of mind with less effort. These effects resemble the skill of expert musicians and athletes capable of immersing themselves in the 'flow' of their performances with a minimal sense of effortful control. ...
"In our Wisconsin lab, we have studied experienced practitioners while they performed an advanced form of mindfulness meditation called open presence. In open presence, sometimes called pure awareness, the mind is calm and relaxed, not focused on anything in particular yet vividly clear, free from excitation or dullness. The meditator observes and is open to experience without making any attempt to interpret, change, reject or ignore painful sensation. We found that the intensity of the pain was not reduced in meditators, but it bothered them less than it did members of a control group. Compared with novices, expert meditators' brain activity diminished in anxiety-related regions -- the insular cortex and the amygdala -- in the period preceding the painful stimulus. The meditators' brain response in pain-related regions became accustomed to the stimulus more quickly than that of novices after repeated exposures to it. Other tests in our lab have shown that meditation training increases one's ability to better control and buffer basic physiological responses -- inflammation or levels of a stress hormone -- to a socially stressful task such as giving a public speech or doing mental arithmetic in front of a harsh jury.
"Several studies have documented the benefits of mindfulness on symptoms of anxiety and depression and its ability to improve sleep patterns. By deliberately monitoring and observing their thoughts and emotions when they feel sad or worried, depressed patients can use meditation to manage negative thoughts and feelings as they arise spontaneously and so lessen rumination. Clinical psychologists John Teasdale, then at the University of Cambridge, and Zindel Segal of the University of Toronto showed in 2000 that for patients who had previously suffered at least three episodes of depression, six months of mindfulness practice, along with cognitive therapy, reduced the risk of relapse by nearly 40 percent in the year following the onset of a severe depression. More recently, Segal demonstrated that the intervention is superior to a placebo and has a protective effect against relapse comparable to standard maintenance antidepressant therapy. ...
"About 15 years of research have done more than show that meditation produces significant changes in both the function and structure of the brains of experienced practitioners. These studies are now starting to demonstrate that contemplative practices may have a substantive impact on biological processes critical for physical health."

With all the buzz about plant-based diets and veganism, people should understand some GENUINE, biologically evolved truths. We, as humans, were NEVER evolved to eat only plants, and to do so, is to proceed against the dictates of evolutionary physiology.
Please read:
The Paleolithic Era
Also known as the Caveman Diet or the Stone Age Diet, the Paleo diet from thousands of years ago consists mainly of meat, seafood, eggs, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. It varied depending on differences in geography, season and accessibility, as hunter-gatherer humans found what they could in their surroundings and survived on it. Their diet produced strong, dense bones and low disease levels.
Although Paleolithic peoples did process some of their food, this was done through simple methods of pounding, grinding, roasting and baking.
In recent years some people have adopted the Paleo diet to imitate the eating habits of their ancestors who shaped our current genetics, thinking it is how our bodies are meant to be fed and therefore will positively influence current health and well-being.
The Neolithic Era
This era is also known as the agricultural revolution, around 10,000BC, where wild grasses and cereals began to flourish and some large game species became extinct as a result of intensive hunting and the disappearance of their habitat when the Ice Age ended.
There was an increased reliance on domesticated food – grains, dairy products and legumes became staples, as well as an increased consumption of fermented food and drinks.
This diet was higher in carbohydrates, dairy fats, alcohol and milk sugars, which is thought to have added to the rise of dental health problems and iron deficiency anaemia.
Skeletal remains show average human heights decreased by four inches from the late Paleolithic era to the early Neolithic era, brought about by the changes in nutrition.
The Industrial Revolution
Starting some 250 years ago, there was an increased reliance on industry-produced, sometimes mass-produced foods, thus increasing people’s consumption of refined grains, fatty domesticated meats, refined vegetable oils and alcohol.
The modern diet is higher in carbohydrates, alcohol, saturated fats and salt, and lower in fibre and protein, increasing the risks of cancer, heart disease, obesity and other chronic health conditions.
In more recent decades, the modern era has seen an increased reliance on fast food.
Today
The modern diet in more developed countries remains similar to that of the industrial revolution – a reliance on mass-produced food. However, more recently there has been an increased consciousness of the effect of our diet on health, the ethical treatment of animals and sustainability of the environment, sparking the rise of diets such as pescatarianism, vegetarianism, veganism, fruitarianism, the eating of raw foods and “clean eating”.
This, last paragraph's goals of "clean" eating can still be accomplished while remaining faithful to the true, Paleolithic nutritional needs of our DNA.
Advances in the research of reducing carbohydrates and adopting more of a "Keto" lifestyle can absolutely transform your health.

Recently, a dear friend asked me what religion I believe in. She knows that I am a Yoga teacher and perhaps thought I would share any insight I might have gathered through my training. I recalled to her the Dalai Lama saying , "My religion is Love."
My own answer, though, based upon all of my reading and research, is that I believe that there is a power, a "source" of "all"...a unifying, life-giving and life-sustaining "force"of the universe. Perhaps it is the universal "CHI" that is everywhere around and in everything supplying the miracle of "being". I believe this force is the fount of all of our "physical laws" and of all of the universe's potential and possibilities.
What this belief suggests to me is that if we accept this force, this power, and if we live our lives with the"knowledge" of it, realizing that we and everyone and every"thing" else are connected and "one", then we tend to live a kinder and more loving, fruitful and meaningful life during our brief time in this form.
When we deny this force we separate ourselves from a life-giving and life-sustaining gift. We become at odds with others, unconnected, sad, depressed, worried, fearful, hateful, violent and ...sick. Disharmony rules our being. The energy inside becomes unbalanced, causing upset and all sorts of disorders.
To acknowledge this force "explains" all mysteries. It makes "explanations" unnecessary. It just "is"...and makes it possible to love and live in harmony.
For each of us it is our own, personal journey. Am I "good" at living this way...no...but, I'm trying. Because I see it as my only hope in my soul for genuine peace .

A talk by my friend and colleague Dr. Georgia Ede. If you do not already know of her, Dr. Ede is a nutritional psychologist and psychiatrist. Formerly of Harvard, and also Smith College, Dr. Ede writes regularly for PSYCHOLOGY TODAY.
Enjoy this truly informative lecture:
https://www.crossfit.com/health/georgia-ede-ddc
OK...I've talked about the grains and starches and sugars and processed food. I shared a list of breakfast ideas.
Now...what do you do to replace the fattening carbohydrates you are cutting so you won't be hungry?
What you do is....Increase your fat intake...That's right...fat.
I've explained in the past that low-fiber, unhealthy carbs like what you are eliminating serve to stimulate the secretion of insulin which is the prime driver of fat storage in the fat cells. Protein foods will do the same if you increase your protein intake beyond your needs for your desired bodyweight. Fat foods, on the other hand, do NOT spike insulin.
When insulin is not promoting fat storage your body mobilizes the stored fat and uses it to burn for fuel (energy).
This does not mean it's ok to gorge yourself on fat, but it does mean that you increase the healthy fat you eat to replace the carbs you are cutting.
Here are some healthy, fatty food choices:
-Avocado
-Whole eggs (organic, cage free, local or all three)
-cheese (organic, raw) (or imported)
-Full-fat, plain yogurt (organic or imported)
Note: Dairy foods contain lactose (milk sugar) which is a carbohydrate. If you go beyond moderate intake, you defeat your goal.
-Dark chocolate (small amount/each day)
-Fish...esp. fatty fish (not "Atlantic" or "farm-raised") Wild-caught, only.
-Nuts ...in moderation. No more than two small handfuls each day.
Note: Peanuts and cashews are NOT nuts. They are legumes and contain significant amounts of carbohydrates. Walnuts, almonds, macadamias, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts are what to choose.
-Chia and flaxseeds. Ground flaxseeds are awesome added to a smoothie or sprinkled over yogurt or salad. Chia seeds do not need to be ground up. Again ...organic, only.
-Organic, extra virgin olive oil.
-Organic extra virgin coconut oil and coconuts themselves.
Note: Do not be afraid of beef, bacon or other meats. Eating bacon sparingly can be done several times a week with no worry. Buy only grass-fed, organic beef and pork, and...enjoy it!! Costs more...but...be frugal with other things...not your or your family's health.
Well, that should give you a start. You will be astonished how satisfied your hunger will be.

No doubt you have heard the reports that red meat and saturated fats and even processed meats are not bad for you ... "anymore".
I, and my colleagues who have for years studied the genuine science have reported this fact for a long, long time.
The non-science that began the vilification of red meat et. al has been wrong all along, and , if you have ever read ANY of my posts, emails, texts or taken the time to look at my website and the information there you would have to agree that we have been attempting for years to create this awareness.
Of course, some so-called "experts" (with monetarily vested interests in preserving the B.S.) are decrying and denying the reports. All that they are actually doing ... AGAIN ...is decrying and denying SCIENCE ... just as they did to begin this health-damaging charade 50+ years ago.

Red meat has been associated with an increase in heart disease and cancer in several studies. But association is NOT causation,
Highly significant reasons to disregard the research on this topic:
Countless studies have found that people who eat more red meat have a higher BMI; are more likely to be overight/obese, smoke cigarettes, and be physically inactive;
and are less likely to eat fresh fruits and vegetables and have higher education levels.
All of these factors are correlated with a higher risk of heart disease and cancer, so it’s not possible to single-out red meat as the culprit.
Many recent studies have disproved the theory that eating red meat causes disease. Red meat (especially grass-fed, organic) is rich in several nutrients the human body requires—like B12, zinc, iron, CLA, and EPA and DHA—of which Americans and other people around the world are notoriously deficient .
But ... irresponsible, misinformed and dishonest research can...!

Are you still listening to the ridiculous "YOU MUST GET A FLU SHOT" hype ? I hope not.
Flu shots are a billion-dollar, money-making scam for the "conscience-less", drug-pushing pharmaceutical companies.
Read the reliable Cochrane Collaboration review. ... here's a conclusion:
“The results of this review provide no evidence for the utilisation of vaccination against influenza in healthy adults as a routine public health measure. As healthy adults have a low risk of complications due to respiratory disease, the use of the vaccine may only be advised as an individual protective measure.”
"The 2018 Cochrane review of influenza vaccination in healthy adults found that the flu vaccine may only have a modest impact on reducing the number of cases of influenza and influenza-like illness but the data was insufficient to determine whether vaccination had any impact on working days lost or on reducing serious complications of the flu during influenza season."
My prescription for EFFECTIVE flu protection:
Wash your hands, eat real food, get fresh air, exercise regularly, get off sugar, don't smoke, get enough sleep/rest ... and your body's own immune system will give you much better protection than ANY scam vaccination ... and it is natural immunity... not some contrived, toxic concoction.

Absolute truth in this article. Combined with healthy eating it is a formula that works ... follow the science.
If you have difficulty falling asleep and remaining sleeping during the night you are among millions with the same problem. I teach my Yoga students and lifestyle clients a very effective method for quickly getting to sleep and staying asleep. It consists of doing a body scan.
These are the steps to follow:
1. Do not eat within an hour of going to bed.
2. Wear loose pajama-type clothing ... or no clothing at all.
3. Keep your bedroom dark ... no lights ... from lamps, clocks, etc.
4. Get comfortable on your back (preferably) or side ... never on your stomach.
5. Close your eyes gently and begin concentrating on this breath rhythm:
- Deep slow inhale to a count of 5 - pause for a count of 3 - long, lung-emptying exhale to a count of 6 - pause for 3 - repeat 6 times, then breathe normally.
6. Starting with your toes, begin to tighten then allowing to relax each portion of your body: toes, soles, instep, heels, ankles, shins, calves, knees (front and back), thighs, hamstrings, buttocks, lower abdomen, low back area, abdominal muscles, ribs, kidney area, chest, shoulders, upper arms, elbows, forearms, wrists, palms, fingers, thumbs, throat, neck area, scalp, and, finally your facial muscles. You will notice (if you are still awake ) that your breathing has slowed-down considerably.
Most times, you will be asleep before you finish the scan, but if not, it should only be a short time before you drift into a deep, peaceful and RESTFUL sleep.
As a general note: Another important factor for sleeping well is to eat REAL FOOD ... not processed, limit your starchy carbohydrates, increase your healthy fat intake and ... DON'T USE SUGAR !!
Sweet Dreams...!
Try doing these each day. It doesn't take long, but the benefits are immense!
These simple exercises, if performed diligently, can be life-changing. Do them each day. Go slowly. Don't be discouraged if you are not "good" at these at first ... keep going . You will improve.

Disturbing is the fact that, according to a new report by the non-profit, non-partisan Miliken Institute, the real economic cost of of the overweight / obesity epidemic in America has been steadily rising for almost 50 years since the inception of the ridiculous Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), and has reached an unprecedented $1.72 trillion each year.
Encouraging ... One of the members of my Reduced Carbohydrate Clinicians Network, Dr. Sarah Hallberg is also chair of the Nutrition Coalition Scientific Council. Last month in a briefing to the "Food as Medicine" group in the House of Represenatives, Dr. Hallberg displayed results from the large, controlled clinical trial she is leading. Using a low-carbohydrate diet, this trial reversed, In only one year, Type II diabetes in 60 % of participants !!
60 % REVERSAL ... !!
As a contrast, the American Diabetes Association realized only one tenth of 1 % reversal using their nutritional program which uses more carbohydrates.
I've reported this before ... and, in people who have not been brainwashed, it is common knowledge. It was getting more ridiculous just before I retired, and, I'm still disgusted with the American Ed. system. Just another example of how our self-serving, political party-based, B.S. agenda damages us every day ... Our children are our future, and they are being educated to be robots.
